A Software System is a set of communicating Components (which may be Processes, Services, Devices, or people), in which some of the components are software.

Kent Beck notes that a software system is "people & computers together".

The goal of software development is to improve the system so it nets more value.

"Results are Not the Point" - the real point is to create a system and grow people who are capable of delivering excellent results over the long term.
