Hey everybody!

Thanks so much for being patient with me. I've finally integrated Crowdin, and am ready to work this into our flow.

This update follows #7317. Changes to the process can be found in this PR: #7684.

Here's a summary of the changes:

Using Crowdin

Crowdin will be our primary tool for managing translations. There are two roles:

  • Proof-readers. Can create new translations and approve submitted translations.
  • Translators. Can create new translations.

All translations must be approved by proof-readers before they are accepted into the app.

Using other platforms

You may contribute PRs separately from Crowdin, however we strongly recommend using Crowdin to avoid conflicts.

Code of conduct on Crowdin

Please treat everyone with respect. Proof-readers are given final say on translations. Translators who frequently come into conflict with other translators, or who contribute noticably incorrect translations, will have their membership to the Crowdin project revoked.

Adding a new language

Create a new Crowdin discussion or GitHub issue requesting the new language be added to the project.

Please only request a new language when you are certain you will be able to contribute a substantive portion of translations for the language.

Becoming a translator on Crowdin

This invite link will add you to the project as a translator. The link will expire in 1 month. Not sure yet how it'll work after that link expires; still learning how crowdin works.

Becoming a proof-reader on Crowdin

Proof-readers are community translators who have established their reliability through contributions. We already have quite a few who meet that expectation!

If you wish to be a proof-reader, please reply to this issue with your Crowdin username. I will evaluate your contribution history and make the call on whether I'm comfortable giving that permission.

Per the Code of Conduct, if I get the sense that a proof-reader is not behaving responsibly, I'll revoke their role.

Kick-off

Proof-readers, please share your Crowdin usernames in the replies. As I approve you, please go to Crowdin and review the translations you administer. If everything looks correct, give the strings the +1! If not, please let me know in the replies here.

Once we've got everything set up, I'll create the first PR via the new process and we'll be in the new groove!

I'll do my best to stay available and responsive to everyone. Please surface any concerns or issues that arise. I did my best to design this process well, but I'm still new to Crowdin so it's entirely possible we'll need to change some things. <3 yall!

Here we go! Thanks for the great work on setting this all up, I am sure it will help us tremendously in the future.

Like on a lot of services and social network, I am @Signez there too! I would like to apply as a proof-reader for the French localization.

Can’t wait to setup the glossary and similar stuff too to help other (future) translators in French!

Oh finally things I love to see.. this should make it easier for more people to contribute 🎉

Just wondering, what will happen to the existing Crowdin project that was started by contributors earlier, like Indonesian, Ukrainian, or Chinese? Will that continue alongside the new process, or is there a plan to move everything under single manager with multiple proofreaders for each language?

pfrazee commented Feb 6, 2025

It's up to them! I'll do my best to get them set up in the new project if they want. If they prefer to stay on their own projects, they can continue to send PRs as before.

I personally think this approach would streamline the localization process and ensure translations are updated in sync with new app releases

Tip to my fellow proof-readers: if you want to mass-approve all the previously merged translations (after all, they are in the live app, so you may have approved them in the past!), follow those steps:

  • In Crowdin, go to the messages.po editor in your language.
  • On the top right of CrowdIn's editor interface, click on the Editor View icon.

Screenshot of the Editor View icon.

  • In the little menu that appears, click on Side-by-side.
  • In the second top bar, click on the Filters strings button.

Screenshot of the Filters strings button.

  • Select Advanced filter….
  • In the little form that appears:
    • in front of the Approval label, select the Translated, not approved option.
    • in front of the Translated by… label, type pfrazee and select him when the autocomplete shows up.
  • Apply the filter by clicking on the Filter button at the bottom of the form.
  • On the top left of the main area, click on the checkbox so it selects every string. A little yellow message will allow you to really select all the strings on all the pages, click to do so.
  • On the top right of the main area, you now have an Approve Selected Strings button to do a mass approval!

Also, @pfrazee, may I suggest that you allow proof-readers access to glossaries? If you are inclined to do so, you can enable this in the Project Settings, then Privacy & collaboration: the subsection is called Glossary Access Settings.

@pfrazee Thank you for taking the time to do this! I can now approve Simplified Chinese translation strings.

Apologies for not considering this earlier, but if possible, could I also have proofreader permissions for the other Chinese locales? I’d like to continue coordinating Chinese translations and help smoothly transition the Bluesky ZH project to the official Crowdin. Once that’s done, I’ll close Bluesky ZH.

Although this is just my proposal for volunteering as a proof-reader if you need one. I think I'm currently happy with my position as translator for now. I'd still be contributing to it from time to time.

FYI I obviously made an account and got a verification email, but when a system has these basic things incorrectly, I am always worried about the rest of their product.

@SleeplessByte

@pfrazee I'd like to proofread Dutch (SleeplessByte).

FYI there are quite a few texts in English that completely miss the mark, especially alt texts and aria-labels. Bluesky is completely missing the mark on being accessible (with zero priority to accessibility issues), but perhaps someone could also be looking at that? I didn't see way to contribute to the source material (other than convoluted PR process here).

@pfrazee Have you decided how often the source English messages.po file will be updated and new strings pushed to Crowdin? I don't know what would work best for other translators, but I think the more time available to work on translating and discussing new strings before a release is cut, the better :)

@auroursa
Copy link

auroursa commented Feb 9, 2025

It would be great if it could be automated—automatically pushing new strings to Crowdin and periodically pulling them to GitHub.

@Signez

Signez commented Feb 9, 2025

Indeed, it would be awesome if at least the push operation (new English strings being pushed to Crowdin to be translated) could become part of a CI action that would be triggered when PR are merged in the main branch!

(I can understand tho that @pfrazee wants to keep the pull operation, i.e. getting our translations back into the product, as a manual, yet easy to do operation, as it's now documented.)

@auroursa @Signez Yes exactly 👍

Others will know better than me what will work best, but – like @Signez suggests – a CI action that basically does steps 6 and 7 in the release process sounds like it might be ideal, as it would mean that the strings available for translation on Crowdin would always be updated with main.

I'm not sure if it would be necessary to run it after every PR is merged though... I see that Crowdin has a useful option to notify users of when new strings are added, and if several PRs which update strings are merged in a short space of time that might cause a bit of notifications overload 😅

Perhaps once a day might be enough?
