Add an intermediate layer of complexity, and allow a list of configurations. If you like, you can run a sequence of separate configurations, e.g "load_raw_images", "reduce" then "subtract". It's primarily helpful to recycle different configurations, where you may only want to change one step but otherwise maintain the same setup.
