good news for you: I'm currently working on a complete rewrite of svg-sprite, featuring a symbols mode (and many more new features). Please have some patience though, will probably take me until around christmas.

good news: I just published the next major release of grunt-svg-sprite. It's rewritten from scratch and now featuring also a "symbol" mode (amongst others). I hope this is what you waited for — thanks for your patience!

I'll close the issue for now, but please feel free to re-open it in case you've still got problems.
