title: 'CKAN Multisite Now Available'
author: waldo
author: waldoj

Today, U.S. Open Data is happy to announce the immediate availability of [CKAN Multisite](https://github.com/datacats/ckan-multisite), a powerful new tool to launch, host, and manage dozens or even hundreds of data repository websites on a single server. [Built by DataCats](https://datacats.com/), CKAN Multisite consists of a Dockerized [CKAN](http://ckan.org/) environment and an administrative interface to manage those [Docker](https://www.docker.com/) containers. Using CKAN Multisite, creating a new data repository takes literal _seconds_ instead of hours or days (or weeks or months).

HTTP is being replaced by HTTPS. The default has changed. The newly-released HTTP/2 standard [is being implemented almost exclusively over HTTPS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP/2#Encryption), which will leave HTTP as a legacy standard. [Firefox and Chrome are both deprecating HTTP](https://konklone.com/post/were-deprecating-http-and-its-going-to-be-okay).

title: 'Here’s Our Open Data Future'

The state of open data is primitive. Most datasets are not found in repositories, but instead rattle around on FTP servers or hard-to-find web pages. Datasets are often undocumented, undated, and schemaless. Even those datasets that are stored within repositories have no change histories, adhere to no schemas, are identified in no consistent way. It’s chaos.

Having completed [our census of U.S. states’ open data holdings](https://census.usopendata.org/), we can start studying the aggregate data and drawing some conclusions. (As, indeed, can anybody, [using the raw census data](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OhVbryeHBsPjJ3TjjVFlfM552pDKRjiUpTAXQJe9miA/).) First up: highlighting the very best examples of each type of dataset. We include nine types of datasets in this census, and following are the states that came out on top.

An essential part of publishing data openly is doing so under a license that allows people to use that data. _Copyrighted data isn't open data._ Those two things are mutually exclusive. Government who copyright their open data are saying “here is our data, please come use it” while also saying “you may not use this data.” Doing so means that serious users of the data will be scared off before they can put it to work.
