Hello,
The ENCODE project has some mesendoderm cell samples, so first, we wanted to discuss a mesendoderm term.
Let us know what you think about the following term...

Name: mesendoderm
Definition: A bipotent layer of cells which gives rise to the endoderm and mesoderm.
is_a: germ layer [UBERON:0000923]
Ref: http://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(01)00307-5?_returnURL=http%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS0092867401003075%3Fshowall%3Dtrue
endoderm [UBERON:0000925] develops_from mesendoderm
mesoderm [UBERON:0000926] develops_from mesendoderm

Thank you!

Early development is something we could definitely do with improving!

We have the concept of a generic hypoblast:

UBERON:0000089 ! hypoblast (generic) *

But I think this is better replaced by a clear mesendoderm definition.

Gut-like ectodermal tissue in a sea anemone challenges germ layer homology.

"Currently, cnidarian endoderm (that is, 'mesendoderm') is considered homologous to both bilaterian endoderm and mesoderm....our data supports an alternative model of germ layer homologies, where cnidarian pharyngeal ectoderm corresponds to bilaterian endoderm, and the cnidarian endoderm is homologous to bilaterian mesoderm."

"The results completely change the way we think of the origin of germ layers. It means that 'endoderm' in sea anemones and vertebrates, although they are called the same, are actually not evolutionary related" adds Ulrich Technau
