# Enabling it

Currently access control is off by default and needs to be enabled by setting the environment variable:

EXPERIMENTAL_ACCESS_CONTROL=1

It may be enabled by default in future versions of OutbackCDX. The 'experimental' label is a out of date. NLA have been using it in production for many years without issues.

Note that enabling it will cause some extra RocksDB column families to be created to store rules and policies.
