Also refactored a test to remove a warning and added the Mahalanobis distance to utils in case we need it elsewhere.

The protonet back-end has been the focus of the visualization capability in the web-app. This PR adds capabilities to the GP that the web-app expects/needs to enable similar visualization. It is not yet ready to merge, but this helps gets the tests running.
