A MP3 file lister for friends. :)
This was the first full-featured application I released on the Internet as freeware. I wrote most of this in highschool after teaching myself C. In the mid-late 90s, mp3 collecting was mostly an "underground" activity. Bandwidth was limited, and each .mp3 had to be purposely negotiated for. This tool allowed collectors to easily list their collection for friends' perusal. As the first ever mp3 listing tool, it saw tens of thousands of downloads from mpegx.com.
One of the more advanced features of DOSBase was MPEG Layer-3 frame header decoding. It also employs linked list data structures, heavy string manipulation, and custom binary datastore input / ouput (this was before XML/JSON). It also includes a custom windowing system (see .jpg snapshots in repo) as I had not yet learned the Win32 API.
What Is DOSBase?
If you are serious about MP3 collecting you need this tool! DOSBase is a multifunctional list creation utility for mp3 collectors. It is a win32 console application with an easy to use interactive interface. It is intended to be used by collectors who name their mp3 files with a particular naming convention (such as title - artist.mp3 or (title)_artist.mp3. DOSBase intelligently extracts all information (titles and artists) and creates nice looking TXT files or HTML documents you can use to trade with or keep inventory (example html output , example ASCII text output). If you don't feel comfortable with it, keep using it! Chances are the features you are looking for are in this utility.
