Introduction

Since the dawn of time liblouis has been licensed under the LGPLv3+. Some distributors that would like to include liblouis have problems with this due to how GPLv3 affects patent portfolios. For example Amazon will not include liblouis on the Kindle or Google will not ship it with Android if it is licensed under LGPLv3+.

For that reason we decided to re-license liblouis under an older version of the LGPL (namely LGPLv2.1+), almost the same license, that provides the same freedoms to the user, but without the provisions on software patents.

The current situation

Liblouis the library is now licensed under LGPLv2.1+. Most of the Braille tables are also licensed under LGPLv2.1+.

Many of the contributors have given permission to re-license, but not all of them. All the source code of the library and many of the tables have been re-licensed to LGPLv2.1+. We can use a code analysis tool to see which tables are still using LGPLv3+ or any other license. The tool queries the licenses and the copyrights:
