This PR ports over the generic fixes for import file extensions and
debugpackage imports from #3494 to themaintenance-v8branch.Might be good if @acolytec3 could review, since I took over changes from his commits and reverted some of the changes (configuration), but wasn't fully sure on everything. So, Andrew, maybe you can also directly push if you spot something and otherwise merge.
