Basic Usage
The below image shows the Disposable Email Helper in action. The user has right clicked on the field requesting the user to input an email address in order to receive a newsletter. The context menu for _Disposable Email Helper has a few menu options that allow you to automate using select disposable email services.
Now, let's zoom in and talk about each of the options
Let's go through each option
Option ①: When you select this option, it will input the default email address. It is useful to use a default email address if you want something you can come back to later. The default name is john_smith
, but you should change this to something unique for you to avoid collisions with other users and reduce the amount of junk in your disposable email account's inbox. Please note that disposable email boxes are not private and anyone who can guess or chooses to enumerate all possible strings for email inboxes can see any messages in the email inbox. These services only provide security by obscurity - so use something long and unique if you want to reduce the likelihood of someone tracking your activity. The default username will be the same, no matter what service you choose. For example, if you select the name john_doe
it will always be the default regardless of the service and domain ending (e.g., john_doe@example.com
, john_doe@fake.com
). You can always change your default name at any time and revert back to an old one if you choose, but the browser extension does not store a history of default names used.
Option ②: The second menu option will insert a random email address using the currently configured disposable email service. Once you select this menu option, (1) the email address will be inserted into the active text field (2) a new email address will be generated and will replace this entry (3) the email address which was just inserted will be added to the top of the history list so it can be reused again later.
Option ③: The Manage Settings option will bring up the browser extensions setting pages. On the settings page you can select the disposable email service you would like to use and set the default name.
Option ④: The Clear History option will delete all of the random email address in the history list. This is useful if you want to reduce a trail of the random disposable email address you have used. Please note the following (a) You must still manually delete your browser history if you want to remove evidence from within the browser of the mailboxes you have used (b) Clearing your browser history will not have any impact on the history in the extension, you must always manually clear both separately.
Every time that you use a random email address, it will be added as a history option. The extension will remember the last five (5) used email addresses. Please note, that switching to a new disposable email service will not change the service associated with a history entry. As you can see in the screenshot, the current service is set to use @dispostable.com
, but each of the history entries (inside the blue rectangle) show the service which was active when the history entry was created.
If you reuse a historical entry, it will be moved to the top of the list so it is easier to find next time. You can also manually clear the history at any time using the Clear History menu option described in the previous section. It is not possible to delete a single entry from the list. Please also note that if you have enabled your browser's history (i.e., chrome://history
), you can still find the email inboxes you have used previously. If you do not want this record to be preserved, delete your browser history.
