Hey! I hope you all had a great weekend! I'll add the presentation to My Heritage before class. Don't forget to do your reading quiz before class this week. I went though on Friday and added of them to the assignments so you can work ahead if you desire. Don't worry to much about them. The questions aren't worth that many points. You can do it with a partner or open book if you'd like. I just want you to read the textbook chapters. On Wednesday after it is due, you will be able to see if you missed any questions.

## Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn

Week three of SOWK 486 is about understanding what direct social work practice and some of what makes social workers unique in our helping style. We will start with an exercise, considering how you have been helped in the past. Many clients we work with as social workers are mandated to participate in services involuntary in some manner. We will discuss how to engage with them through some best practices. The agenda for the session is as follows:

- How we help
- Orienting perspectives for social work practice
- Evidence-based practice
- Involuntary clients
- Ecological Systems Model
- Social work jobs and roles

## Unit Resources

In your ethics class, you will likely read the entire code of ethics, but it is useful to read through it and familiarize yourself with the values and expectations of being a social worker. You can find it online [National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics](https://www.socialworkers.org/about/ethics/code-of-ethics).

You can find the presentation for `[Fall 2024 SOWK 486w Week 03 - Direct Social Work Practice]()`.

We are going to talk about the roles that social workers take on today. I made a video a while back, [The 15 Hats (ahem, Roles) of Social Workers](https://jacobrcampbell.com/blog/2019/02/the-15-hats-ahem-roles-of-social-workers/), that also talks about this if you want to use that as a primer.

Sorry to be a little late to upload the unit introductions and resources. Just a reminder that I have posted all of the reading quizzes and assignments so you know when things are coming up (as well it's listed in the syllabus). Looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday.

## Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn

Week four is a continuation of laying the groundwork for this course. It is focused on providing an overview of the helping process. The Hepworth et al. (2022) text formats the helping process into three phases.

- Phase 1: Exploration, Engagement, Assessment, and Planning
- Phase II: Implementation and Goal Attainment
- Phase III: Evaluation and Termination

During the session, we will be examining an overview of considerations we should have in each of the phases. We will also be looking at how we set the environment with our clients and what the interviewing process looks like. Finally, we will spend some time discussing some potential ethical dilemmas. The agenda is:

- Overview of the three phases of the helping process
- Setting the environment
- Interviewing clients
- Practice with ethical dilemmas

In talking about rapport and connection with clients, we review Leach (2015) to understand some of the strategies and behaviors that improve client trust. You can read the paper if you are interested.

I will post the presentation for this week prior to class.

Week five is a synchronous class week. We will meet on Saturday (09/21/24) to discuss understanding and using the DSM-5-TR. I will share the slides on MyHeritage as we approach class. Please also make sure that you bring your DSM with you.

## Unit Assignments

**Read**

- Segal et al. (2019) Basics and Beyond in Clinical and Diagnostic Interviewing

**Watch**

- Kinter (2020) Introduction to the DSM-5

**Weekly Online Discussion Forums**

This week, there are three discussion forums for you to engage in. I want you to make a total of **two replies** across any of the forums forums before class this Saturday. The following is a brief overview of the forums for this week:

- The forum, [thoughts and findings about the diagnostic process](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_581/2425_FA-SOWK_581-0/🏫_W-05_916_-_922.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=1f5d2465-2a9e-4d99-94c6-c104f2e035a5), asks students to consider the reading provided this week and share some of their thoughts.
- In an effort to expose students to an overview of the DSM's content, [Findings Looking into the Content of the DSM](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_581/2425_FA-SOWK_581-0/🏫_W-05_916_-_922.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=1426a140-fce2-4a01-87a7-58f44b5494d8), provides a place to engage with various resources and reflect on that engagement.
- I thought that taking the format of an [AMA - The DMS Edition](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_581/2425_FA-SOWK_581-0/🏫_W-05_916_-_922.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=b3772a09-21a6-4143-ba63-198fe67a5017), might be an interesting way to spend a portion of our class this week.

## Unit Resources

You don't have any reading from the textbook this week (which also means no reading quiz). I have two sources (and some more in the forums) for you to review this week. First, Segal et al. (2019) describe a diagnostic interview well. It is a book chapter, so it is a bit longer, but I think it is valuable and additive to the information offered in your textbook. There are some really good discussions about emerging and new clinicians that I think could be helpful.

I would like you to watch Kinter (2020). I went down the rabbit hole as I was preparing, looking for a good overview view for you to watch. I like the presentation that Klinter offers. Its is broad, but with some interesting specifics for different areas of diagnosis. In one of the forums, I share some other potential sources for students to look at. His video is only 30 minutes long and covers most of the areas of the DSM. I will say that it is the DSM-5, not the DSM-5-TR, so even some of the changes he talks about have changed again since (consider substance use disorders), but I think it provides some good considerations. See [Introduction to the DSM-5](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxpKi7zMqr8).
