Have a great break! Rember, no class in-person class this week.
## Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn
Due to the Thanksgiving Holidays, we do not have an in-person class this week, and our focus is on introspection about our personal growth and development. We have spent the rest of the semester discussing how we can support, affect change, and understand our client's needs. This week, I want us to turn inward and consider how we do that for ourselves. The following are the objectives I have for you this week.
- Be introduced to the concept of the Wounded healer
- Consider gratitude as a type of self-care
- Consider what you can do to enhance your personal growth as you go through school
## Unit Assignments | ||

**A-01: Class Participation and Engagement**
For week 14, we are just having class online this week and I am giving you the opportunity to respond in a couple of forums. My hope and expectation is that you spend some time being introspective this week and write about it. There are three forums open for you to participate in, you don't have to write in all three of them, but you are to post at least two replies across any of the three of the forums (feel free to post more if you are interested). The following are the three forums:
- First, there is a forum to be able to your own [personal development and education](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_486W/2425_FA-SOWK_486W-1/W-14_1125_-_121.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=47b7286e-2d8e-47e0-8c31-e07b47187930) and what are things that you have done or want to do to improve yourself.
- Second, is a forum to discuss the reading and concept of [considering the wounded healer and practice](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_486W/2425_FA-SOWK_486W-1/W-14_1125_-_121.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=dd7e3427-78f2-4e19-8bc1-24a65c130f30)
- Finally, there is a forum regarding [taking on perspective of gratitude](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_486W/2425_FA-SOWK_486W-1/W-14_1125_-_121.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=bda2b2e5-6a89-45e9-b4fb-8fc997dd7043)

**A-05: Extra Credit Assignment Options**
I offer students two different opportunities for extra credit. The first is a shorter assignment for evaluating your own communication style and use of empathetic conversation through a reflective paper. The second is a more intensive research paper looking into evidence-based assessment practices or generalist practice intervention for social workers. These assignments are extra credit and not mandatory.
**Assignment 5a: [Extra Credit] Empathetic Communication Self-Evaluation Reflective Paper**
**Meta**: Points 20 pts (5% of total grade in extra credit); Deadline Monday 12/02/24 by 08:00 AM; Completion via My Heritage Assignments as a file upload. Locations [MyHeritage Assignment](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_486W/2425_FA-SOWK_486W-1/Assignments.jnz?portlet=Coursework&screen=AssignmentDetailView&screenType=change&id=8a39ae6e-37fb-4966-82fd-4b67b0236f51), [Syllabus Assignment Handout](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Portlets/ICS/Handoutportlet/viewhandler.ashx?handout_id=e97546fd-4ff8-45f4-a334-0d9f81dc0784)
**Purpose**: The _Empathetic Communication Self-Evaluation Reflective Paper_ provides an avenue for students to self-reflect regarding their communication style and the amount of empathetic communication they participate in.
**Task**: Students will write a reflective paper of 500 to 750 words. They will consider their use of empathic language in daily life and how to be more empathic.
- Report on what your communication patterns are.
- Discuss what empathetic communication patterns look like.
- Plan for what you can to improve your empathetic communication.
**Success**: Students will submit a paper demonstrating strong academic writing and self-reflective skills. Essays are graded according to the Reflective Paper Rubric. Feedback will be provided, and final grades are due by the instructor no later than 12/18/24 at 5:00 PM.
**Assignment 5: Extra Credit Assignment Options**

The second is a more intensive research paper that looks into evidence-based assessment practices or generalist practice interventions for social workers. These assignments are extra credit and not mandatory.
**Assignment 5b: [Extra Credit] Evidence-Based Practice for Assessments or Generalist Practice**
**Meta**: Points 40 pts (10% of total grade in extra credit); Deadline Monday 12/02/24 by 08:00 AM; Completion via My Heritage Assignments as a file upload; Locations [MyHeritage Assignment](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_486W/2425_FA-SOWK_486W-1/Assignments.jnz?portlet=Coursework&screen=AssignmentDetailView&screenType=change&id=b55c74ef-ed63-408d-915f-d9fcb7215cf0), [Syllabus Assignment Handout](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Portlets/ICS/Handoutportlet/viewhandler.ashx?handout_id=20572b45-a61b-498f-aae6-6c76e099df8a)
**Purpose**: The _Evidence-Based Practice for Assessments or Generalist Practice Paper_ allows students to dive into the literature on social work best practices for engaging with individuals. This task enables students to demonstrate knowledge of practice behaviors they will need as future social workers.
**Task**: This paper reviews an evidence-based assessment practice or generalist practice intervention for social workers. Students will write the report in APA format regarding strong academic writing and proper formatting. The paper will include an introduction, a history of the given assessment or intervention, a description of the implementation of the intervention, and the strengths and limitations of either the research or the intervention itself. The paper should be approximately 1,250 to 1,500 words in length. An abstract is not necessary for this paper but may be included.
**Success**: Students will submit a paper demonstrating academic skills describing research found in peer-reviewed journal articles. They will be able to demonstrate scientific writing skills. Grades will be assessed using the APA Research Paper Rubric. Feedback will be provided with final grades due by the instructor by 12/18/24 at 5:00 PM.

## Unit Resources | ||
In thinking about being introspective, I want students to consider gratitude. There is a powerful YouTube video that I am including as an assignment this week by Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell, titled [An Antidote to Dissatisfaction](https://youtu.be/WPPPFqsECz0).
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WPPPFqsECz0" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
There are to journal articles I have provided as handouts for you to read. First is O'Connell et al. (2018) that can provide some good context to the use of gratitude in a counseling setting. The second is related to Jung's concept of the wounded healer and how it can provide insight and guidance in the impact that coming into social work as a wounded healer can have (Newcomb et al., 2015).
Make sure you have a wonderful break.

- Be able to define trauma and understand some of the types of trauma
- Develop an overview understanding of diagnoses that trauma- and stressor-related
- To be able to articulate what trauma-focused treatment looks like
## Unit Assignments | ||

**Weekly Online Discussion Forums**
This week, six discussion forums are available for you to engage in. I want you to make a total of **six replies** across any of the forums. At least four replies must be related to any of the prompts provided. The other replies can be answering prompts or replying to your peers. The following is a brief overview of the forums for this week:
- The forum [Chapter 12 Reflection Questions](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_581/2425_FA-SOWK_581-0/💻_W-14_1118_-_1124.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=f0844803-89ed-4b7a-9ec0-f1ad27792378) focuses on exploring trauma theory by reflecting on prompts provided in the textbook. These questions examine topics like the impact of traumatic memory, intergenerational trauma, and therapeutic models in case examples like Beth and Lucy.
- The forum [Exploring the Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_581/2425_FA-SOWK_581-0/💻_W-14_1118_-_1124.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=0073a8a1-5566-47ca-a83f-4936de2da656) invites you to examine this section of the DSM-5-TR. Students can relate their learning to one of the prompts, including describing the criteria, considering similarities and differences between diagnoses, or reflecting on the context of these diagnoses.
- Creativity and making things are sometimes of interest to students. In the forum [Create a Poster or Infographic about Causes and Impact of Attachment Trauma](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_581/2425_FA-SOWK_581-0/💻_W-14_1118_-_1124.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=78e22a17-ac2c-460a-bd70-e989cef141fb) provides a space to develop a graphical representation of causes and impacts of attachment trauma.
The textbook provides an example of a practitioner using mentalization-based treatment, and the forum [Skills Used in Mentalization-Based Treatment](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_581/2425_FA-SOWK_581-0/💻_W-14_1118_-_1124.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=f21d6f33-d5f4-4742-b10d-7d67d983871f) asks students to explore further applications of this therapeutic approach.
- The forum [Exploring Trauma and Resilience in Media and Literature](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_581/2425_FA-SOWK_581-0/💻_W-14_1118_-_1124.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=4f6c7403-a309-459a-85f3-880d9bc096e9) asks to explore some of the resources provided this week and share about your findings.
- The forum [Deeper Dive into Trauma-Focused Treatments](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_581/2425_FA-SOWK_581-0/💻_W-14_1118_-_1124.jnz?portlet=Group_Discussion_Forums&screen=PostView&screenType=change&id=ab428e65-616c-481d-909a-a5f132ff4eef) encourages you to explore trauma-focused treatment interventions discussed in the textbook. Research one or more approaches, such as EMDR, TF-CBT, or Internal Family Systems Theory, and share details about the techniques, training requirements, or practical applications of the methods in trauma treatment.
While you don't have to post in all the forums, I expect you to read all the posts across all the forums. I want people to make at least some of their posts earlier in the week, and the forums are due by Monday Morning (11/25 at 8 AM).
**Reading Quizzes** | ||
You have a reading quiz, [W-14 Reading Quiz for Cooper and Granucci Lesser (2022) Chapter 12](https://myheritage.heritage.edu/ICS/Academics/SOWK/SOWK_581/2425_FA-SOWK_581-0/Assignments.jnz?portlet=Coursework&screen=AssignmentDetailView&screenType=change&id=712a88db-3ec7-473e-b62f-4069add695e0) which is due on It is still due at the same time, **by 8 AM on Saturday, 11/09**.
## Unit Resources | ||
I will post a lecture video here by Friday. I plan to talk about vicarious trauma. SAMHSA has a good paper that can act as a primer to the subject [Understanding Compassion Fatigue](https://store.samhsa.gov/product/understanding-compassion-fatigue/sma14-4869).
One of the forums asks to explore media and literature related to trauma. You could start by picking one of the 56 podcast episodes that fit in the category of [Trauma and Trauma-informed Care](https://www.insocialwork.org/category/trauma-and-trauma-informed-care/). There are many other great resources as well that discuss trauma and its impact. Consider [SAMHSA's Concept of Trauma and guidance for a Trauma-Informed Approach](https://store.samhsa.gov/sites/default/files/sma14-4884.pdf) or the [National Child Traumatic Stress Network](https://www.nctsn.org).
While it goes beyond the scope of this week's assignment, a book that I highly recommend for developing a deeper understanding of trauma is [The Body Keeps The Score - Bessel van der Kolk, MD.](https://www.besselvanderkolk.com/resources/the-body-keeps-the-score).
## To-Do Lists | ||
- Read chapter 12 in the textbook and do the learning quiz
- Complete six replies across any of the forums
- Engage with at least one of the resources provided |
Oops, something went wrong.
