There are a number of reasons for doing this, as discussed in #2222 and #2053
Basically, the rate method needs to be more powerful and enhanced for transient solutions. There is also a good reason to 'lock-in' the conductance values for the algorithm. However, these can change with time, so perhaps these should be stored too.
