Segfault in sgemm_kernel on old x86_64 #2047
Comments
Actually both suspect files are identical 👍
|
Thanks. It does indeed look as if this is an original bug from GotoBLAS. (And at least a trivial search for this pattern does not turn up any other hits in the x86 and x86_64 kernels, so any remaining bugs must be more subtle). |
Are you sure about that? Upon further inspection, it looks like the nano kernel does things pretty differently regarding what seems to be the same loop. |
Fix bug OpenMathLib#2047. Signed-off-by: Celelibi <celelibi@gmail.com>
You are right, I have overdone with diff aliases |
@brada4 not sure I understand but I do not think there is any reason to change or merge existing layout for older hardware. |
They use identical kernel sets, thats not going to change I suppose, and trims a meg or two from library size |
Pretty sure they use different parameters and you would have to change a sizable number of files just to purge a few old targets. If anybody is actually worried about library size, there is now DYNAMIC_LIST |
I'm closing this issue now. (Why hasn't github done it when the PR was merged?) |
@Celelibi sorry for using your ticket as a chat room |

This check currently fails, since the used __AVX2__ macro is only defined if getarch itself was compiled with AVX2/AVX512 support. Signed-off-by: Piotr Kubaj <pkubaj@anongoth.pl> * Fix build for PPC970 on FreeBSD pt. 1 FreeBSD needs DCBT_ARG=0 as well. * Fix build for PPC970 on FreeBSD pt.2 FreeBSD needs those macros too. * cgemm/ctrmm power9 * Utest needs CBLAS but not necessarily FORTRAN * Add mingw builds to Appveyor config * Add getarch flags to disable AVX on x86 (and other small fixes to match Makefile behaviour) * Make disabling DYNAMIC_ARCH on unsupported systems work needs to be unset in the cache for the change to have any effect * Mingw32 needs leading underscore on object names (also copy BUNDERSCORE settings for FORTRAN from the corresponding Makefile)

The single precision gemm kernel consistently crash on an old x86_64 CPU. But only with large enough matrices. Like 1000*1000.
Here is the simplest program I could write that shows it.
Weirdly enough, it doesn't crash for a single thread.
And here is the cpuinfo.
Here is what I understood of this bug.
The kernel
sgemm_kernel_8x4_sse
allocate an additional stack space at some point.https://github.com/xianyi/OpenBLAS/blob/4741ce803bd13acb4ff0ff1cf57f7a64cf7ef77c/kernel/x86_64/gemm_kernel_8x4_sse.S#L385-L387
The 128 bytes are used for some variables, while the
LOCAL_BUFFER_SIZE
is just enough space to be used in a loop later on.https://github.com/xianyi/OpenBLAS/blob/4741ce803bd13acb4ff0ff1cf57f7a64cf7ef77c/kernel/x86_64/gemm_kernel_8x4_sse.S#L419-L478
But the beginning of the buffer used in the loop is defined to start 256 bytes into the stack.
https://github.com/xianyi/OpenBLAS/blob/4741ce803bd13acb4ff0ff1cf57f7a64cf7ef77c/kernel/x86_64/gemm_kernel_8x4_sse.S#L84
As a result, the loop overwrite the old stack frame, including the saved registers. This makes the program crash later on.
The fix should be pretty straightforward: allocate
$256 + LOCAL_BUFFER_SIZE
bytes on the stack. I tried and it works.I guess this bug has been hiding there for near a decade. I also think there's the very same bug in
gemm_kernel_4x8_nano.S
. But I can't test it.The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:
