For a comprehensive understanding of the fMRI session protocol, please refer to the fMRI Standard Operating Procedure document.

Inclusion Criteria

For the iEEG studies, subjects were 10-65 years old, able to provide informed consent, had IQ > 70, fluent in English, with self-reported normal hearing, normal or corrected-to-normal vision, and cognitive and language abilities within or above the normal range in formal neuropsychological testing performed before surgery. They must not have had an electrographic seizure within 3-hours prior to testing.

Quality Check

A comprehensive quality assessment was conducted on the iEEG data. The data underwent manual annotation by epileptologists, excluding channels within the epileptic onset zone, as well as those exhibiting artifacts or showing complete flatness due to electrode contact issues. Channel rejection was independently performed by both the data monitoring and iEEG teams, with results compared to ensure consistency. Additionally, electrode reconstruction was verified to align with subjects' CT scans. Finally, we inspected for significant disturbances in the spectra.

Exclusion Criteria

Subjects who were unable to complete a sufficient number of trials due to excessive muscular artifacts, movement, noisy recordings, or a decision by the subject to terminate the experiment were excluded. In addition, data was also excluded if it did not pass any of the pre-defined data quality checks.

Inclusion criteria were defined to ensure participant suitability for fMRI scanning and data analysis. Criteria included age range from 18 to 35 years due to potential challenges in maintaining central focus beyond this age. Participants were required to be right-handed, have no hearing impairments or use of hearing aids, possess corrected-to-normal vision with soft lenses or no vision problems, and demonstrate good English comprehension. Additionally, participants were required to be MRI-compatible with no metal or medical implants, no history of claustrophobia, and no braces. Exclusion criteria encompassed a lack of psychiatric or neurological disorders, including no formal diagnosis of attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder (AD(H)D), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), epilepsy, brain surgery, or severe cerebral concussion.

Quality Check and Exclusion Criteria

For fMRI, we combined visual inspection of structural and functional images with automatic criteria for motion-related artifacts. Third level checks of data quality were done using both MRIQC (Esteban et al., 2017) and fMRIprep (Esteban et al., 2020), separately for phase 2 and phase 3 datasets. The output from MRIQC and fMRIprep was visually inspected. Datasets with clear artifacts and other indicators of low data quality (incorrect reconstructions, and substantial signal dropout or distortion) were marked by a trained observer, and if the detected problems were judged severe enough to warrant potential exclusion, data were additionally inspected together by the data monitoring team and collaborators at DCCN and Yale. In practice, we rejected subjects where a significant part of the cortex, roughly > 5%, was not covered by the brain mask (tissue was not segmented). Next, datasets were checked for extensive motion, using MRIQC image quality metrics. Specifically, the percentage of fMRI volumes that exceeded a threshold of 0.2 mm framewise displacement (FD) and DVARS (Power et al., 2014) measure were calculated per run and averaged per session. Finally, each MRI session whose percentage framewise displacement or DVARS deviated by more than 2 standard deviations above the group mean was marked for rejection.

The iEEG data for the seven subjects listed below do not have the correct sampling rate in the original EDF files. The correct sampling rate for these subjects is 2048 Hz. The raw data has not been updated with the correct sampling rate to avoid alignment issues when constructing the events. However, the same measurements in the BIDS release, provided in the BrainVision format, have the correct sampling rate as expected.
