Python 2 was sunset on January 1st 2020, i.e. two years ago; it is
about time to move on and focus our efforts on Python 3.

It may be reasonable to drop support for Python 2 as discussed here #238 (comment)

We could keep this PR open if we believe that time hasn't come just yet
