The following issue seems to have arisen:

  $ cd /users/wd15/Documents/python/fipy/trunk
  $ export FIPY_VIEWER=dummy
  $ python examples/diffusion/mesh1D.py
...
  NotImplementedError: can't instantiate abstract base class

Clearly trunk/fipy/viewers/init.py@3523#L85 calls _Viewer directly, but trunk/fipy/viewers/viewer.py@3523#L57 throws an error in the case of a _Viewer being instantiated directly.
