I think a parenthesis "()" is missing from the code in the _plot() function of MatplotlibVectorViewer.
_plot()
ln 104 of matplotlibVectorViewer.py:
shape = (mesh.getShape()[1], mesh.getShape[0])
should probably be
shape = (mesh.getShape()[1], mesh.getShape()[0])
