Playout is complex because we have to deal with gaps and different timings. It can also be that we have different audio/video formats and we have to unify them for playout. Another thing is that these days everyone wants to go to the cloud. This is especially interesting for 24/7 video streaming, because internet servers usually have a much more stable network connection than a normal office situation.

A few years ago I started the project [ffplayout] (https://github.com/ffplayout/ffplayout), which has all the advantages of a good and modern playout solution. It's written in Rust, which makes it very portable, it works with ffmpeg - which can take almost any audio/video format and transcode it. ffmpeg also runs on any platform, uses very little resources and can run very well in a cloud situation because it doesn't need any GPU feature.
