Based on gitbook, mdbook is a configurable rust books generator.

mdbook

very fast build times much less lightweight
while abstracting many things away it maintains very high configurability uses mathjax
sweet sweet search bar weird syntax for TeX blocks
preprocessors
easy bootstrapping
has ready themes

pandoc

personal touch everything is done from scratch so new features require time to implement
katex is fast and pre-renderable uglier design
100% configurability

Main things holding me off: losing the personal touch, slow mathjax, and retarded TeX blocks

Mathjax could be replaced with katex with some tinkering and TeX blocks could be replaced with preprocessors (which is just as stupid)

mdbook has an open issue about katex
