Bob Marshall Wilderness Research

The Bob Marshall Wilderness is a huge area (1.5 Million acres) south of Glacier National Park.

Its most prominent feature is a 12-mile, 1000+' limestone wall along the Continental Divide called the Chinese Wall. The wall is near the center of the wilderness, 20 trail miles from the eastern trailheads and ~30mi from the closest western & northern trailheads.

Basic Orientation:

Permits - None required

Reasons I like it:

Great setting -- a huge interesting feature (the Chinese Wall), deep in the backcountry, above a 3000' deep valley

Day trip options -- day trips along the wall, over passes to the north/west sides, or up Prairie Reef

Solitude -- the entry day along the CDT may have traffic, but once off that trail I expect little

Distance -- it is two days' journey from the trailhead. No easy way to bail out early

Route options -- there is a loop option to bypass the CDT on the return

Great photos and a lot of useful text. This is the best trip report I've seen for this area.
Trip Two in particular is a good candidate route (camp off trail near Hermit Lake; day trip along wall)
