It could be useful for scripts to be able to operate on previous state to make decision whether previous value must be updated or retained.

Sorry, my bad, it's already implemented:

terraform-provider-shell/shell/utility.go

Line 43 in b477c4a

cmd.Stdin = stdin

It's not documented though.
