What's the problem this feature will solve?

Hi,

When will #11598 be released officially? Because of this, mac users have trouble using my packages that uses setuptools-scm.
I can always guide them not to use Homebrew python and use /usr/bin/python3 but it's always frustrating when there's an extra step for the setup.
I know that this problem has been fixed, but I've been waiting for it to be released. Any minor bug fix release would be really helpful.
