KDE Kate has a great option that prevents opening a new window. If you spawn it with --new-tab it opens a tab in the same window.
--new-tab
It also has a settings option where you can enable "always use a single process" which means that you never have multiple windows.
For people that use splitting and tabs, it is really annoying to always have multiple windows open. So this would be great.
