I got pretty excited when somebody mentioned the zfs allow command, as it would simplify security considerably. Unfortunately, it looks like it doesn't work properly on ZoL:
root@backup:~# zfs allow me readonly data
root@backup:~# sudo -su me
me@backup:~$ zfs list data
Unable to open /dev/zfs: Permission denied.
Unable to open /dev/zfs: Permission denied.
