Converting Majordomo 1.x Lists
------------------------------
The Majordomo2 package includes a conversion script, convertlist.pl, which
can perform a simple type of conversion. This is only the first step,
however, and the process of converting a list cannot be fully automated.
Before Running convertlist.pl
-----------------------------
You must, of course, have Majordomo2 installed and running first. During
the installation, a handful of questions are asked which essentially set
defaults for convertlist.pl; the only purpose is to save some typing.
It is probably best to stop your MTA before converting lists; if so
configured, Majordomo2 will perform the actions necessary to route mail to
the new lists. This may result in conflicting configurations with
unpredictable results.
Majordomo2 generally preserves the meaning of configuration variables, but
there are notable changes:
*) There is a single master password; convertlist.pl will take the value of
admin_password for this. approve_password will be completely ignored.
If you need the multiple password functionality, investigate the
passwords variable, which can be used to create passwords that can carry
out various actions.
*) Digest configuration is completely different. Digests no longer live in
separate lists, and the old digest_* variables are gone. Currently
convertlist.pl does not do anything special for digest lists, although
this is planned.
*) subject_prefix and reply_to generally work as before, but now users can
elect to receive them or not. These are controlled by user settings
(flags). For compatibility, the default for newly added users is to
receive prefixes and Reply-To: headers so that you can configure them
once and have all users immediately begin to see them (as in
Majordomo1).
However, if you don't currently use them but would like to allow them in
the future, it is best to set the default flags such that users _don't_
receive them by default. This will allow you to specify values for
subject_prefix and reply_to and have users not see them unless they turn
them on. convertlist.pl will give you the opportunity to set this up.
*) The mechanism for restricting posting (restrict_post) has changed a bit.
A list can have any number of subsidiary address lists (auxlists)
attached to it, and these can be used for any purpose.
So, if you set up address files that aren't real lists and use them in
restrict_post, the Majordomo2 method will suit you fine and you can even
administer them remotely. convertlist.pl can handle these for you.
If you set up separate hidden lists such that only the list owner could
add to them in order to get remote manageability, then you don't really
need separate lists any longer because the auxlists are remotely
manageable. You should add these addresses to an auxlist and add the
name of that auxlist to restrict_post. convertlist.pl will not do this
for you, but it will warn you of the situation.
If you set up a special list for the purpose of allowing users to post
to a restricted list without receiving mail from it (a "post only" list)
then you have two options:
1) Add these users to the list manually and set them to "nomail".
2) Create a separate, real list (like you had before) and use the new
"list:" (short for "list:auxlist") notation for referencing members
of another list.
Running convertlist.pl
----------------------
convertlist must be run by a user with enough privileges to read the old
list and configuration files. It is not generally necessary to run it as
root.
An invocation of convertlist looks like this:
perl convertlist.pl -d example.com -option argument list list list
The script takes the following options:
-d - the virtual domain that the converted lists will live in. Of
course, this domain must have been set up already. If omitted, the
default domain will be chosen. Leave it out if you have only one
domain.
-o - the directory containing old the old lists. Only necessary if you
didn't tell the installer about it.
Any number of lists can be specified; they will be converted in turn.
Simply answer the questions posed to convert your list. You will be given
a chance to examine and edit the set of Majordomo commands that will be
executed; the command line to be used is also shown at the end of this
file.
