Currently the stat system doesn't allow for much interesting variation. Skill trees should be added, this should be the primary way of distinguishing character aptitudes.
The game should have a concept of 'derived stats' that is used uniformly for players and monsters. For players, derived stats will be primarily based on skills. For enemys, derived stats will be primarily be based on values in the enemy markup. Derived stats are calculated for each situation, equipment, ability used, active spell effects, etc.
Elemental resistances should be considered.
This will enable a lot more interesting abilities.
The game will need to be rebalanced following this.
