Maybe best to wait on this a couple of months to see if a solution arises from the community as it seems like an obvious use-case and used to exist in the old gallery shortcode. I've created a feature request and commented here.

Likely the best place to do this is in the Edit Gallery screen when you can manually order the images. There should be a drop-down above that allows you to sort by a field and then override the results if desired.

Other ideas:

  • re-order the sponsor media items in the db by setting the dates so that items appear alphabetical in the gallery
  • install a new gallery plugin like foogallery that has a sort function
  • try using the gallery field in ACF

I checked, and the current site does sort alphabetically.

The gallery block is getting an upgrade in 5.2.2 to release on June 13. See what it can do.

I could create my own custom gallery using this code. I could link directly to the correct url from here without relying on the redirect and also set the sort order.

Or I could fork the Wordpress gallery block and make the modifications there.

LGTM. I don't mind if we have to throw it away in a few months when they add the functionality upstream.

I'd say this is ready for feedback from Megan. I've added instructions.
