A common macro definition used by people I work with is the following:

\def\({\left(}
\def\){\right)}

This however breaks syntax highlighting (screenshot below is from Helix):

I realise this is likely a consequence of the fact that \( would usually be the opening math delimiter, however the above document compiles just fine, so this is indeed valid in LaTeX.
