Research Interests

I investigate the dynamics of ocean flows and the climate system by developing dynamical models based on first principles and model emulators based on machine learning tools. I am currently studying the energetics and dynamics of eddy-mean flow interactions, overturning circulation and convection in the oceans, with an emphasis on the Southern Ocean and the margins of Antarctica. I combine theoretical analysis with analysis of data from model simulations of systems ranging from idealized to realistic and from observations to understand climate-related physical phenomena on a fundamental level. I use this analysis to inform the development of models of complex processes based on first principles and the development of model emulators using machine learning that are used to explain and make predictions of the state of the climate system and to evaluate the impacts of climate change.
