The (hopefully) last fixes for that are now merged in https://github.com/schildbach/public-transport-enabler and also in https://gitlab.com/opentransitmap/public-transport-enabler. But watch out, these changes unfortunately currently require minSDK 24, while you're on 21, if I've seen correctly. It's probably mainly the Java streams API and some other minor stuff that would need to be replaced.

@grote @ialokim what do you think about this? Is requiring minSDK 24 (currently at level 21) an option, or should we fix things to target minSDK 21?

need to check if this can be auto-desuragered by the build system: https://developer.android.com/studio/write/java8-support-table

Otherwise your call and @ialokim's if he wants to maintain such patches on his PTE fork.
