Current version of this box still gives:

==> ubuntu1604: Waiting for HGFS kernel module to load...
The HGFS kernel module was not found on the running virtual machine.
This must be installed for shared folders to work properly. Please
install the VMware tools within the guest and try again. Note that
the VMware tools installation will succeed even if HGFS fails
to properly install. Carefully read the output of the VMware tools
installation to verify the HGFS kernel modules were installed properly.

I'm building a new/updated base box. We'll see how it works!

Ah, didn't realize it wasn't fixed in open-vm-tools or in Vagrant... but by switching back to an older/known-working version of Ubuntu 14.04 :P https://github.com/chef/bento/pull/584/files

With 16.04, unfortunately, this isn't an option, I don't think.

Bento has an open issue for it here: chef/bento#591

And it looks like this is yet another upstream issue where Hashicorp seems to be content to let it rot: hashicorp/vagrant#6775

/me thinks it may have been a dumb idea to toss $80 + $80 to get VMware + the extra plugin for Vagrant... development seems to have slown to a crawl—or a stop.

Trying again with Vagrant 1.8.4...

Tried on 14.04.4 and it didn't help, so now I'm going to try with 16.04.

Works now using latest version of the geerlingguy.packer-debian role. I just tagged a new version, and I'm uploading the box update for my geerlingguy/ubuntu1604 box now (as well as a box with VirtualBox 5.0.22 guest additions).
