Checking 'Custom Ranges' hides 'Number of Colors' which may make people think those two options work independently and they can set either of them. But actually we need to set 'Number of Colors' to the number of the custom ranges.
I hope https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/kibana/master/heatmap-chart.html makes the relationship between 'Number of Colors' and 'Custom Ranges' more clear.
