Frequently Asked Questions about play over SMS

What is play via SMS

When you want to play a game using two or more devices (as opposed to by having several players on one that you pass back and forth), you have two choices for how the devices will exchange moves: via the internet (wifi or cellular), or via SMS (assuming they're smartphones.) While the first has always been supported, play vis SMS is a new feature.

Why choose play via SMS?

Here are a few reasons:

  • Direct connection without use of a server
  • No "room name" to agree on: your phone number is all that's needed
  • Listening for SMS takes a lot less battery than connecting to a server
  • Moves usually arrive more quickly
  • If you have unlimited texting and a limited data plan, it can save you a bit of money

Why NOT play via SMS?

  • If you don't have unlimited texting
  • If your friends don't have unlimited texting
  • Some versions of Android limit the number of messages an app can send per hour

How does it work?

Android allows an app to send and receive SMS without user intervention. Crossword adds a code to its messages so that it can identify them on the other end (and prevent them from filling up your inbox.)

How many messages are sent/received?

Approximately 50-100 per game (though you'll never see them.)

When my wife and I were testing this feature heavily we had several months with 2500 more messages than is normal for us. You don't want to pay $.25 for each of those!
