Ensure that python 3.13 can be supported (and that old non-EOL python versions continue to work).

setuptools needs to be addressed, as do any warnings / depreciation notices.

Could you please add Python 3.12 support which is the default version in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

I can do 3.12 as well. It requires fewer source code changes than 3.13, so I'll test it as well and add vendor'd libfdt support once complete.
