It should be buildable on windows and it could replace miktex which currently is just a repackaged upstream binary...

The big advantage of miktex is that miktex installs needed packages on the fly, so it doesn't need preinstalled latex packages or the user using the tex package manager to install them...

Complete agree @JanSchulz. We should consolidate around texlive if that works for people. I'll try to give Mac a look soon.

We have a Mac build of TeX Live now.

Ironically, I gave building Miktex for Linux a try (conda-forge/miktex-feedstock#13). Though I'm not sure which will be harder.

Unlikely as we have mostly switched away from conda, but anyone is free to submit a PR using our recipe
