Description

Several members of the Community raised and discussed an issue observed and reported in the BAT Brigade Discord from new users converting to Brave from Opera GX.

New users from Opera GX are reporting that Brave is not automatically detecting Opera GX from available chromium browsers on first run onboarding.

Context from the Community Call Brave Talk transcript included for clarity below:

Someone joined the discord recently who was trying to onboard from Opera GX and they were asking about how to import all their stuff because unlike with Chrome where you click the like import button that makes it somewhat automated to do some of that transition over. It doesn't work the same way for Opera GX. So is that something we can get implemented?

Bauzz
they had to manually take their like put marks and other stuff and like download the files and stuff and move it over.

That's a great call out. I wasn't aware that it wasn't as smooth on Opera GX. Other folks on the team may be aware, but this is my first time hearing about this specific issue. I'm making a note of it now to surface it to the team.

Yes, so I just wanted to clarify because, yeah, so the issue that they were having was Oprah GX wasn't one of the standard import from this browser, which they were okay with because it's a lesser, lesser used browser. They said there was an option to import from Chrome, import from different options, but then there was also an import from other Chromium browser. And they were saying that it wasn't auto detecting. And when they translated the page, I guess so they could take a screenshot to share it in with support or in the server. the other chromium option disappeared. And they had to manually export the settings using the HTML and then manually import the settings using that HTML.

(@mrose17 - for what it's worth, this community call forum with users dictating context and having multiple confirmations from others in attendance captured verbatim is a fantastic and under-utilized use case for Marvin transcript functionality in Brave Talk - wanted to tag you firsthand as an FYI).

Steps to reproduce

  1. On Windows OS, install an instance of Opera GX. Save bookmarks, history and other data that would typically be imported during first run onboarding conditions.
  2. Install and open a new instance of Brave.
  3. On the first run welcome tour, attempt to import the saved data from Opera GX into the new install of Brave.

Actual result

They said there was an option to import from Chrome, import from different options, but then there was also an import from other Chromium browser. And they were saying that it wasn't auto detecting. And when they translated the page, I guess so they could take a screenshot to share it in with support or in the server. the other chromium option disappeared. And they had to manually export the settings using the HTML and then manually import the settings using that HTML.

Expected result

As a chromium browser, Brave should auto-detect the Opera GX browser installed on the local machine, and include that as a listed option to import data from.

The behavior for Opera GX as a detected chromium browser should follow the expected behavior for Chrome or Edge.

Reproduces how often

Easily reproduced

Brave version (brave://version info)

1.75.151 Chromium: 132.0.6834.57 (Official Build) nightly (64-bit)

Channel information

  • release (stable)
  • beta
  • nightly

Reproducibility

  • with Brave Shields disabled
  • with Brave Rewards disabled
  • in the latest version of Chrome

Miscellaneous information

Needs investigation, but has had several people from Community validate that the issue is currently occuring.
