The top level of the folder hierarchy in the project panel is confusing:

It is not really clear what it is as:

  • It is a lighter font than the sub-folders
  • It is not selectable, or collapsible like the subfolders are

Basically, it is a folder, but is styled differently from all other folders, which makes it a bit confusing, and not clear what it actually is.

Furthermore, because it is not selectable, it doesn't appear possible to create a file in the root of the project directory.

I would recommend styling it like all other folders, and give it the same functionality.

+1--the visual hierarchy doesn't seem right right now. I'm not sure it should look exactly like a folder--if anything it should maybe be a little more prominent than the folders.

Garth - this isn't urgent but if you had time please take a look.

I believe Garth has a proposal to make that heading more prominent as well as add an "Open Files" heading over the working set. I remember it looking much more clear in those mockups.

@mikechambers: Re creating a file in the top level, you can do that by selecting any file at the top level before choosing File > New. When a file is selected the new file will be its sibling.

@peterflynn Yeah, that is part of the issue though. It is different than any other folder, and thus not intuitive.

Reviewed and leave it open since the design had been adressed in an earlier sprint.

We a design update in the works, we played with labeling the working set we had trouble adding as it messes with indenting a bit.

You can see the design here.

I added a variation with a working set label here.
