I have had to do a lot of make installs recently and it took me a while to realise why my local mime.convs and mime.types kept disappearing. Just moving it to mime.X.O doesn't really help. After two installs the old copy is still lost. Could it be made a bit more intelligent please?

The thing is, you shouldn't be modifying mime.types and mime.convs, but instead should provide your own .types and .convs files to provide local mods (e.g. "local.types" and "local.convs"). I'll make sure we add comments at the top of the mime.types and mime.convs files indicating this (I thought we already had that, but I guess not), but because CUPS could easily stop working with bad mime.types and mime.convs files, we really want to overwrite the old files on install...

That sounds fine, can not find any mention of it in the documentation!
However it is common to for example uncomment
application/octet-stream application/vnd.cups-raw 0
would that be lost or does it need to go in local.convs?

Fixed in Subversion repository.

Yes, you need to create a local.convs file to keep local mods separate from the installed files when installing from source.
