@sommerluk I've managed to fix this issue by applying special font for specific list of characters:

Original sorce: https://github.com/wireapp/wire-webapp/blob/6b3e6f5d3ba8fa8d58614304dad5685cafe67acf/app/style/common/variables.less#L20-L46

Basically include this css before you using your font:

@font-face {
  font-family: emoji;
  src: local('Apple Color Emoji'), local('Segoe UI Emoji'), local('Segoe UI Symbol'), local('Android Emoji'), local('Noto Color Emoji'), local('Emoji One'), local('Twemoji');

}

And then in place where "Source Sans Pro" font is used prepend it with emoji font.
Something like this:

body {
    font-family: emoji, "Source Sans Pro";
}

It is important that emoji font goes on the first place, it will render only characters that are defined in unicode-range property, for the rest chars web-page will use fonts that goes after.
