Temperature

Is there a way to make something similar to temperature? I want to "heat" a pan where when fire is underneath it, its color slowly rises and can spread to nearby cells but not too far (if heated in the middle, it wont keep spreading to the edges) and when no longer being heated it cools down over time. Is/will there some sort of timer or origin point for a cell for depending on the distance to it so a different rule applies? Some form of coordinate relative to a point or cell (or even the mouse) would be super nice! How might I go about this or is it even possible to do?
