since we are using Y connector, There should minimum amount of oxygen which is required to flow from the inlet pipe to the patients body.
while we are using Y connector it consist of 3 opening , One inlet, outlet and the other one towards the patient. The oxygen from the inlet will not directly flow towards the patients body (that is towards the mask) ,a little bit amount of oxygen will flow towards the outlet opening as it has two opening. so we need to find the amount of oxygen which will flow from the inlet opening to the outlet and towards the mask (or the patient). Without knowing the exact amount of oxygen towards the patient and towards the outlet i think so it is much more difficult.
Because amount of oxygen towards the outlet also should be considered along with amount of oxygen towards the patient.
inorder to maintain healthy body in patient, oxygen is necessary as metioned.

Input Oxygen :: Towards Patient
Input Oxygen :: Outlet Tube

1st Option

I think so , there should be a barrier in the Y connector towards the inlet and Outlet. So oxygen will not flow directly towards the outlet from the inlet side.
Or there should be only flow of Oxygen between inlet and the 3rd Opening along with 3 rd opening and Outlet. No direct connection between inlet and outlet.

or

2nd Option

The ratio of the amount of oxygen towards the patient and ratio towards the outlet should be considered for the exact amount of oxygen required for the patient in every minute. Otherwise i think we cannot provide enough amount of oxygen for the patient.

For example :

                 if we a patient requires 0.5 L/min we need to provide oxygen greater than 0.5 L/min otherwise amount of oxygen is also directly carried towards the outlet along with the opening towards the patient.

(THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION)

Thanks;
