# Overview
This module belongs to the LandR-Biomass family of SpaDES modules and, in conjunction with the LandR module 'Biomass_core', it simulates vegetation responses to (fire) disturbances: mortality, serotinous regeneration and regeneration by resprouting.
It's functioning is very similar to taht of [LandR] Biomass_regeneration, the difference being that Biomass_regenerationPM *does not* assume stand replacing fires. Instead, this module follows the partial mortality mechanisms in the LANDIS-II Dynamic Fire System Extension (v. 3.0) and kills cohorts depending on the fire severity and species' fire tolerances.
Hence, unlike in the Biomass_regeneration module, new cohorts regerating via serotiny or resprouting will have to deal with shade conditions, should a fire only partially kill a stand.
Because the module was programmed to respond to fire disturbances, it will only "do domething" if the user, or another module, provide a raster of burned pixels (`rstCurrentBurn`). Should this raster be missing, the module will not fail, but it also won't change any cohort. This is important because should another (fire) module provide a `rstCurrentBurn` the user must be aware that in non-fire years, this object must be "emptied".
Also, the calculation of fire severity depends on 3 other rasters of fire behaviour properties: crown fraction burnt (`fireCFBRas`), fire equilibrium rate of spread (`fireROSRas`) and fire critical spread rate for crowning (`fireRSORas`). *Dummy* versions of theres rasters will be generated based on a supplied `rstCurrentBurn`, however the user can choose to pair this module with Biomass_fireProperties and Biomass_fuels (the later needing Biomass_core to run), for fuel calculations and fire behaviour based on simulated vegetation and climate data.
# Functioning
Should a `rstCurrentBurn` exist the module will:
1. Assess which pixels were burnt
2. Calculate fire severity, based on the fuel types that were present in these pixels, as well as weather conditions
3. Compare pixel severity with the fire tolerances of the species that were present in burnt pixels and kill cohorts accordingly (see LANDIS-II Dynamic Fire System Extension v3.0 manual for more detail).
4. Activate serotiny depending on which species were present in the pixel and shading conditions
5. For pixels where no serotiny happened, activate resprouting depending on which species were present in the pixel and shading conditions
6. "Initialise" new cohorts by giving them biomass.
