Context: see the discussion that started here.

This task is to find all similar patterns in the library (all of them should be from recent PRs in the driver-only hashes EPIC), then devise and implement a solution that covers all uses cases.

Probably best done after #6145 and #6147 in order to avoid conflicts and be able to look at all possible users.
