Faster charging is definitely something that is still missing in BYD electric cars.

If mainstream electric cars could charge half of their batteries in 5 minutes (from 20 to 70 %), they wouldn't need to carry heavy batteries all the time to be convenient. A WLTP range of 400-500 km would be more than enough in most cases.

With faster charging and lighter batteries, electric cars can become cheaper and more efficient.

Higher C-rates would also be great for electric vehicles that have very limited space for batteries, like electric motorcycles. For example, an electric motorcycle with a 10 kWh battery that could be charged at 60 kW would be great.

I'm confident that in the next few years, 3, 4, 6 and even 10 C-rated batteries will become common.

I'm curious about the charging rates that BYD will provide with its first sodium-ion batteries.

With such high C rates batteries will not be a bottleneck issue anymore but the grid will become a serious lagging part of the puzzle. Right now, the grid is mostly not prepared for this kind of consumption, and together with renewable sources the energy itself is becoming less and less of a cost in a total price of kWh. Fast charging on highways is unnecessarily expensive because of this exact problem. So with the development of batteries, more emphasis should be put on upgrading the grid system to modern needs. But not with old-fashioned solutions such as more transformers and thicker cables because than the kWh itself will be just more and more expensive. There are so many emerging technologies that will be able to solve those issues and keep costs down.

Good points, agree that battery buffers will be useful, especially for those areas with weak / old grids.

Weak areas will be much faster to solve their weakness with batteries such as graphene or titanium than waiting for the grid update. However, I strongly believe batteries will replace transformer station upgrades in many cases in the future. Right now I am working on two such projects to evaluate cost/benefit analysis. I will be happy to share data with you. I hope the result will support my thesis because than would open so many new opportunities and prove old boys from the energy sector wrong in their conventional thinking and hopefully finally push them to start thinking out of the box. That would benefit both the sector and consumers.
