{% hint style="info" %} The Rootstock Mainnet archive node has a size of 132GB on September 22nd, 2024 {% endhint %}
Last updated at: 22nd Sept 2024
Official docs - https://dev.rootstock.io/node-operators/
First, update, upgrade, and clean the system:
sudo apt update -y && sudo apt upgrade -y && sudo apt auto-remove -y
sudo apt install ufw -y
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw allow 22/tcp
sudo ufw allow 80
sudo ufw allow 443
sudo ufw allow 4444
Run this command to remove any conflicting docker
`for pkg in docker.io docker-doc docker-compose docker-compose-v2 podman-docker containerd runc; do sudo apt-get remove $pkg; done`
Add Docker's official GPG key:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ca-certificates curl
sudo install -m 0755 -d /etc/apt/keyrings
sudo curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc
sudo chmod a+r /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc
Add the repository to ppt sources:
echo \
"deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu \
$(. /etc/os-release && echo "$VERSION_CODENAME") stable" | \
sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null
sudo apt-get update
Install docker
sudo apt-get install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin
# Test docker is working
sudo docker run hello-world
# Install docker compose
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install docker-compose-plugin
# Test the docker version
docker compose version
Make and switch to the working directory for the Rootstock node
mkdir rootstock && cd rootstock
Create and edit the configuration file:
nano node.conf
Paste the following content into the file You can find all the configuration options here
If you are interested in running the config for other networks, you can find the configs here
blockchain.config.name = "main"
database.dir = /var/lib/rsk/database/mainnet

Create and edit the docker compose file
nano docker-compose.yml
Paste the content into the compose file.
In this Docker Compose file, we are utilizing the prebuilt Rootstock node image available on dockerhub, where you can also find other prebuilt images.

This section mounts the host's data directory for blockchain storage and the node.conf file for configuration into the container,
volumes:
- ./data:/var/lib/rsk/.rsk
- ./node.conf:/etc/rsk/node.conf
docker compose up -d
Use docker logs to monitor the rootstock node. The -f flag ensures you are following the log output.
docker logs -f rsk-node
You should see a response similar to this once your node starts syncing

To get the web3 client version
curl http://localhost:4444 -s -X POST -H "Content-Type: application/json" --data '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","method":"web3_clientVersion","params":[],"id":67}'
Output
{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":67,"result":"RskJ/6.3.1/Mac OS X/Java1.8/ARROWHEAD-202f1c5"}
To check the block number
curl -X POST http://localhost:4444/ -H "Content-Type: application/json" --data '{"jsonrpc":"2.0", "method":"eth_blockNumber","params":[],"id":1}'
Output
{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"result":"0x14144a"}
The following command enables the launchpad repository:
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:ethereum/ethereum
Then, to install the stable version of go-ethereum:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ethereum
Once geth is installed and running, run the below command to attach geth to rsk node
geth attach http://127.0.0.1:4444
Check the blocknumber - the result should match the current rootstock block number
eth.blockNumber
Output
6996674
