2016

"Beanie the Barbarian", named after our team mascot "BeanieBot" and this year's game, was our sixth robot designed to play the 2016 game FIRST STRONGHOLD. He was designed with a shooting mechanism in the center to make top goals, and an arm on the back to get trough defenses. It is also out first robot to use vision processing, the camera with the blue ring, to find goals, line up, and make a shot.

FIRST STRONGHOLD is played on a 27' x 54' field. Each alliance commands one tower, five defenses, and a 'secret passage' which allows their robots to restock on ammunition, called boulders. One defense in each alliance's set of five, the low bar, is a permanent part of the field. Three defenses are selected strategically by the alliance prior to the start of their match. The final defense changes periodically by audience selection. During the 2 minutes and 15 second match, robots are controlled by student drivers from behind their castle wall at the end of the field. Teams on an alliance work together to cross defenses, weaken the opposing tower by scoring boulders in it, and finally surround, scale and capture the tower.

Beanie the Barbarian will compete in the 2016 Queen City Regional, in Cincinnati, OH.

+

Beanie the Barbarian competed in the 2016 Queen City Regional, in Cincinnati, OH. There we were ranked 34 out of 56. Although we did not get selected for an alliance, we cheered for our friends form Logan, WV team 337 (Hard Working Hard Hats) who played hard in their final matches.

What We Do

+

The Community Outreach Team carries out a role similar to PR in a corporation. We reach out and contact partners, arrange demonstrations and community service for the team, and strive to spread the message of our team and FIRST as a whole. We are also in charge of any advertisements or promotions for the team. We achieve this through a variety of media forms, be it print, presentation, or social media. In addition, we are trusted with applying and competition for various FIRST team awards, such as the prestigious Chairman’s Award.

+

Who Does It?

+

Virtually anyone can be on the outreach team. We have a variety of students who do tasks such as public speaking, writing, photography, cinematographers, video editors, and many more. Basically we do almost everything required to be a cohesive team that has nothing to do with building the robot. If you enjoy the robotics team but prefer writing or public speaking to building the robot, you may fit best in the Community Outreach Team!

We Hope You Give Community Outreach a Chance!

Who is Electrical?

+

The Electrical Team is resopnsible for the robot's control system. That being said we are responsible for making sure that the control system is up to date and functioning properly.

+

Is Electrical Right for You?

+

If you work on electrical you will need to learn now the systems on the robot work. We use technology like Power Distribution Panels (PDPs), Bridges (WiFi Routers), Pneumatics Control Modules (PCMs), Voltage Regulator Modules (VRMs), and many more. Electrical is not just wires that you work with; you also work with pneumatic systems as well, but no worry you will be taught how these work, too. Plus, you don't need prior knowledge of power tools or anything that we will work with; someone will always be able to show you how things work. All we require is focused hardworking individuals with a deire to learn.

This is the Mechanical Team!

+

We are the people resonsible for the skeleto of the robot, you could say. Our students are the people who design and build our worot for that year's game.

+

What Do We Do?

+

We look at the game specs for the year and decide how we should handle it. Our students and mentors work together to see what drive train we nees, what physical devices our robot needs, and anything else neeed for the robot to be productive. Then it is designed on a computer, so we can get and idea of it before it's built.

+

Nervous About Mechanical?

+

You shouldn't be! Our students and mentors will teach you everything that you need to know. They will teach you how to use various powertools to rabricate our robot from the ground up! All that we ask is that you are safe and come prepared to learn!

WE are the PROGRAMMING Team

The PROGRAMMING team within PARTs is composed of a mentor and three students.

Brandon Duke is the programming mentor, currently a Computer Science student studying at Marshall University. Our current programming team is Jarren, a senior at Winfield High School; Jack, a sophomre at Hurricane High School; and Chance, a junior at Teays Valley Christian.

-

What do we do?

+

What Do We Do?

We are the group responsible for making the robot move. Ofcourse we are not the ones who build the robot, but just as mechanical is important to build the robot, without us the shell of a robot could not move. You can think of us as the makers of the brain of the robot.

-

Who can Program?

+

Who Can Program?

When it comes to programming we believe that anyone can do it. We take the time to teach any student reguardless of programming experience. For most of the students on the PROGRAMMING team now, started out with little or no experience what so ever. Over the years Brandon has developed training courses and labs to teach students, designed in mind for those who may be programming for the first time.

Programming is done in languages, much like speaking. Our language of choice is LabVIEW developed by National Instruments. LabVIEW is a graphical programing language perfect for those just learning. It allows students to see how the code works and walk through it, without the added stress of learning a text based programming language.
